How Bitcoin fees work
Bitcoin fees are not a percentage of the amount you send. They depend on how much block space your transaction uses (its size in virtual bytes, vB) multiplied by the fee rate you choose (satoshis per vByte). A payment of $10 and a payment of $10 million cost the same if their transactions are the same size.
Miners pick the highest-paying transactions first. When many people transact at once, the minimum rate to get into the next block rises; when the mempool empties, even 1–2 sat/vB confirms quickly. That is why checking live fees before sending matters.
Tips to pay less
- Use native SegWit (bc1q) or Taproot (bc1p) addresses — inputs are 40–60% smaller than legacy.
- Consolidate small UTXOs when fees are low (weekends are often cheaper).
- Enable Replace-by-Fee in your wallet so you can start low and bump if needed.
- If you already sent too low, see how to speed up a Bitcoin transaction.
