How long does a Bitcoin transaction take to confirm?
Short answer: about 10 minutes for the first confirmation if the fee is right — and anywhere from hours to days if it isn't.
The 10-minute average
Bitcoin adjusts mining difficulty every 2,016 blocks so that blocks arrive on average every 10 minutes. But block discovery is random: intervals of 1 minute or 40 minutes are both normal. A transaction with a competitive fee is typically included in the next one to three blocks — 10 to 30 minutes.
How many confirmations do you need?
| Use case | Typical requirement | Approx. time |
|---|---|---|
| Small personal payment | 1 confirmation | ~10 min |
| Exchange deposit | 1–3 confirmations (varies by exchange) | 10–30 min |
| Large or high-value transfer | 6 confirmations | ~60 min |
Exchanges set their own rules; check the deposit page for the exact number.
Why yours is taking longer
The single biggest factor is your fee rate relative to everyone else's. If your transaction pays less than the next-block rate, it waits until demand drops below it. During busy periods that can mean hours or days. Other causes are covered in why Bitcoin transactions get stuck.
Estimate your wait
Paste your TXID into the status checker. It compares your fee rate with the projected next blocks and shows your estimated queue position. If it says “beyond projected blocks”, don't expect a quick confirmation without action.
Make it faster
- Sender: bump the fee with RBF.
- Receiver: use CPFP.
- Neither possible: premium acceleration — usually confirmed within one or two blocks.
